rosalynroth 's review for:
Sarah's Key
by Tatiana de Rosnay
I want to first emphasize the importance of shedding light on the Vel d’Hiv roundup and acknowledging the French governments role in this tragedy. Books like this play a key role in bringing awareness to events taken place during the Holocaust, and ensuring that such events are never forgotten.
With that said, I felt that Sarah’s story did not receive as much focus as it deserved. Instead, much of the book was centred around Julia’s personal life, such as her failing marriage. I found it unusual for a book of this nature to be so wrapped up in the struggles of a woman from 2002. It would have been better if the book kept Julia’s part focused on what her character was created for, her journey in uncovering Sarah’s story.
I also found the writing a little lazy at times. There were moments that undoubtedly stuck with me plot wise, but I feel as if there were many time jumps and plot points which could have been written in more depth.
Overall, while I do have my critiques, I recognize the importance of this story and appreciate the efforts to bring necessary attention to this painful part of history.
