Candide
by Voltaire
This is intimidating...
Favorite passage so far that seems most applicable to the theme: "I have been a hundred times on the point of killing myself, but sitll was fond of life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our worst insticts. What can be more absurd than choosing ot carry a burden that one really wants to throw to the ground? To detest, and yet to strive to preserve our existence? To caress the serpent that devours us, and hug him close to our bosoms till he has gnawed our hearts?"
My favorite part of this short read was when the tragic characters are finally together again and find that they're bored and disatisfied with life. The horrific events that unfolded in their journey was a more accurate portrayal of life. Unfortunate circumstances, death, disaster, and amongst those, Candide focuses on the little glimpses of happiness and hope that surface along the way. What's life without a little action and a goal?
