Where Are the Children? by Mary Higgins Clark
dark
mysterious
tense
fast-paced
4.0
One of the things I love about my thriller-based book club is the inspiration to read outside of our comfort zone, even within the genre. Our most recent vote was between some of the classic queens of the genre: Agatha Christie, Sue Grafton, or Mary Higgins Clark. The slim majority went to Where are the Children? by Mary Higgins Clark. I was curious to see what would be different in a book from 50 years ago. (1975 releases are now 50 years old!?)
📖: Nancy Eldridge's kids, Michael and Missy, have been outside their Cape Cod home for maybe 15minutes. When she checks on them, she only finds one of Missy's red mittens. How could this be happening again? Nancy's secret is out. This has happened to her before, and once again, she is likely to be the prime suspect.
🤝: This may be a good fit if you enjoy:
- missing person cases
- a variety of perspectives
- stormy settings
💭: I had no idea what to expect reading a 50 year old thriller. There were moments where she didn't use many words, but the darkness of the villain was clearly vile. I loved the perspectives and key roles of folks in the community. It truly took a village, and I love reading about helpers in my thrillers. I enjoyed the lack of cell phones and technology we have today. I thought the pacing was great, and while I had an idea of the villain, I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to see how the characters would tie it all together.
There were a few signs of the times with language, prejudice, and male dominance, however, Clark seemed to be working towards progress.
Rating: I really liked it! (4)
