The Damned
by Renée Ahdieh
3.5 Stars
I started this book with high expectations— The Beautiful blew me a way with another world of vampires with gothic New Orleans, I loved it. The draw-dropping ending made The Damned one of my most anticipated books of 2020.
While it was good, it didn’t live up to expectations. I found the first 150 pages very slow. It was an overload of world-building and background information that was portrayed in a confusing way, however, once you get past it, the story gets better. Filled with more magic, more twists and turns, and more deception it’s exactly what you would expect from any good vampire book.
Overall, the last half of the book redeemed itself. The romance between Sebastian and Celine is something I found lacking through the entire book between major life problems and memory loss, and there wasn’t enough story I was invested in to keep me as interested as the first book. Despite this, Ahdieh’s writing pulled me in and got me interested at some points through the book. However the ending left me desiring more— there HAS to be another book, right?
