Movies Showing Nowhere
by Yorik Goldewijk
I liked the idea of this story, I thought it was original and I enjoyed seeing what the author did with it. There were some interesting characters in the story but I didn't like the main character, Cate. She has has a difficult upbringing without a mother and with only a depressed father and an overinvolved neighbour raising her. But there are quite a few outbursts of violence from Cate that are never addressed as being the wrong thing to do, in fact it's more often viewed as the opposite. The book is written from her perspective and she is angry at the world so it's not always a nice read. We do sometimes get to see beyond Cate's impressions, such as detail of her neighbour's past, in an attempt to develop Cate's empathy.
A few things may have been lost in translation but overall it was a quirky read that I liked.
