On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas
WOWOWOW I loved this book. There were elements of perseverance, anger, romance, suspense and so much more all piled into one beautiful story about never giving up when times are toughest.
Angie Thomas is an amazing writer and I love her work.
This book is about Bri, struggling while her mom faces unemployment causing her and her brother to face lack of food in the fridge. Bri’s father died from a gang member shooting him; he used to be a legendary rapper. Bri’s dream is to make it big in rapping, like her dad, because as her mom isn’t making a sufficient amount of income, Bri feels it’s her responsibility to make it big and supply her family with food in the fridge. She believes her chance at fame is the answer. But then she writes a song about how people treat people like her, that seems to cause more trouble than fame. But does it actually? Bri made some questionable decisions at times. Sometimes she spoke her mind a little too much. But I loved her persistence, her love for her family, her passion for rapping, and making a change. She didn’t give up; she had dreams to achieve. There was also a little romance in the book which, for me, always adds some excitement!
This book brought a few tears and it helped me feel, sympathize, with some of the characters.
I 10000% recommend you read it because it is AMAZING!!!
