Things We Hide From The Light by Lucy Score
Did not finish book. Stopped at 20%.
It took everything out of me to not DNF this book, but alas, here we are.
I liked “Things We Never Got Over” well enough to start reading this one, but I found myself speed reading through it because I was just waiting for SOMETHING to happen. I only got about 20% in before I said enough is enough.
I don’t usually hate the grumpy/wounded hero MC trope, but I just couldn’t get into this one. I think probably because his character wasn’t really portrayed this way for most of the first book, so his attitude/demeanor just didn’t feel right to me.
The female MC was annoyingly immature. The whole “ew, feelings and touching and relationships are gross” act is maybe more suitable for a teenager, not someone almost 40. Maybe there’s a valid excuse for it explained later on, but I sure as hell was not waiting around to find out.
Some of their early interactions were just weird. The author was obviously trying to create some sexual tension, but it was not it. They didn’t have that much meaningful interaction at all and then all of a sudden they’re horny af for each other? They’re Slow dancing in her apartment, he’s telling her she makes him feel alive, and there’s some kind of “magical spark” they feel when they touch (because of course she hates being touched)?? 🙄 I wasn’t buying it.
I was also irrationally annoyed by the swear jar at Knox and Naomi’s house. Are you telling me a bunch of grown ass adults can’t swear? Like BFFR.
