I didn't find this one as engaging as the first. The first half of the book was a lot of back-and-forth in the timeline. I don't know if there was a way for Klune to write the backstory of Gordo and Mark without doing that, but it was still hard to get invested in either timeline. There was a lot of repetition in the sections, too. Like the past timeline would start the chapter with something, and the next time it cut to the past it would repeat the exact same starting lines.
Not only that, but I found it hard to be invested in Gordo and Mark as a couple. Readers didn't really get to see them fall in love like Joe and Ox. This love story was a lot more messy and fragmented, where in one section Gordo found Mark annoying and in the next he wanted to kiss the guy. Maybe if more time had been devoted to them, I might have been able to get behind their mutually possessive and toxic relationship. As it was, I didn't think they should get together.
I didn't care much for the villains, either. It was a little confusing, since it seemed to throw the problems at the reader pretty rapid-fire. Though that could've been me speed reading through those sections.
I still read the smut, though. I'm only human.
Not sure if I'll continue with the series. I do like Robbie and Kelly as characters, but I don't know if I care about the larger plot to bother.
