The Thorn Birds
by Colleen McCullough
I started this book on the challenge to read a book from the year of your birth. Instead of a elation from tackling the goal, it felt like it took me 4 decades to read. I wanted a sweep me off my feet romantic story for February but I could barely find the interest to pick it back up each day. In addition I see this story through the jaded lens post-Catholic priest scandal not as those reading in late 70s 80s or 90s. Parts made me extremely uncomfortable and didn't even seem to be realistic. My main complaint is that almost every character's narrative was almost entirely in their head and completely over dramatic. I know our inner thoughts can be over the top but this was just too much. I found the characters for the most part selfish and not like-able. I'm astounded at the book's high marks but chalking it up to different tastes and expectations. The one saving grace of a storyline was wild Justine and thank goodness for that. 2.5/5 rounded up because I feel guilty , but it doesn't stand the test of time.
