Marking Time
by Elizabeth Jane Howard
In addition to Marking Time, I read the two other books (Confusion and Casting Off) that complete the four-book Cazalet family epic which began with The Light Years. This series takes an upper-class English family from before the start of WWII all the way through to the aftermath of the war. It's a solid story with interesting characters and a realistic depiction of the times with its hardships and problems, many of which I had never thought about in reading more romantically-colored stories of that period. Sometimes though, the story is just too slow and lacks warmth.
