Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken

I can't believe I didn't review this right after I finished it. I hate it when I don't do that because all the feelings aren't fresh in my brain.

So after the first book crushed my soul, the second book picks up with Ruby working for Kate and we get a new cast of people. I don't remember most of them that well because I didn't really care that much. I always dislike it when the second book or season has to introduce a million new characters instead of focusing on the ones that you really wanted to hear about. Ok, so its Vida, Nico and Jules, I had to look it up through the lovely Recaptions.

I think the more important of the new roles was Cole, who is Liam's older brother and an agent with the Children's League. I loved his part of the story because he was a great reminder to Ruby about what she did in the previous book and kept Liam still fresh in the story until he could be brought back in. Basically Cole had been working undercover. He and Liam met up, but someone was tailing Liam, so as he tried to make a quick exit, he took Cole's jacket instead of his own along with some important data Cole had been collecting. Needless to say, the Children's League needed that information so they set out to find Liam.

Poor Liam has been through hell since Ruby left him. They find him in a camp near Nashville operated by a kid named Knox who claims to be the Slip Kid (obviously Ruby knows better), but Knox is a big bully who has a lot of blues at his back. He thinks of the other colors as lesser, he doesn't feed them as well, and if they get sick, they are left out in the cold with no food since they weren't able to provide for themselves. This is where we find Liam again, the poor child nearly half frozen and practically dying from pneumonia. Needless to say, Ruby is pissed.

Much of the book revolves around Liam and Ruby dealing with trying to heal him as well as him dealing with his memories. Honestly, it's heart breaking because my love for Liam is very strong. But we are reunited with the friendly face of Clancy as well, who has shown up at the Children's League after the group returns. Naturally, he has a scheme, but I wasn't really surprised to find out his mother had something to do with the experimentations.

The book ends very dramatically, but not to such a degree that I felt devastated. Just mildly broken. Overall, I loved this book. I love the uniqueness of the story, but still he common elements from the first one. I loved seeing old characters again and I'm glad to see Liam and Ruby back together again. I just kinda hope that lasts. And I'm really interested to see more about Cole, I will admit he was the character that surprised me.
