Howard the Duck, Volume 1: Duck Hunt by Chip Zdarsky, Ryan North

4.0

Howard and Tara head to Florida to find the Nexus of Realities so Howard can return home. Unfortunately, other people have their eyes on the Nexus AND Howard...

Apart from an issue of Marvel Team-Up, my only other exposure to Howard the Duck was the movie. A couple weeks ago, V-Stock was having a 50% off sale and I snagged this for five bucks. It was easily worth it.

The book throws you right into the deep end. I guess they expected me to read Howard the Duck Volume 0 first. Anyway, Tara, a shape shifter, drives Howard to Florida to find the Nexus. Lots of shit involving the Wizard, The Stranger, The Collector, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, and The Guardians of the Galaxy happens. It was surprisingly entertaining.

Zdarsky's sense of humor seems to be in line with my own. Joe Quinones' art is cartoony without being too cartoony, perfect for a story featuring a talking duck PI, Rocket Raccoon, and gender-flipped clones of the same. Fortunately, the story stays fairly serious considering it features a talking duck and the humor doesn't become overly ridiculous. Howard travels all over the galaxy after accidentally bonding with the Nexus and winds up back home after all... of sorts. The ending made me want to read the next volume right away so I guess I liked it way more than I thought it would.

Howard the Duck: Duck Hunt definitely did not lay an egg. I'm going to keep my eye out for volume 2. Four out of five stars.
