I don't know if it is the sequel syndrome or the fact that I chose the audiobook over reading the physical copy, but this one did not excite me as much as Caraval. Or maybe it was the fact that this book has Donatella as the MC, and I don't care for her as much as I did for Scarlett. Not liking the character can "break" our enthusiasm for the book. The narration by Rebecca Soler was good.

The issue with how this series was made is that I'm following one sister and ignoring the other. Only by the end do we discover what Scarlett was planning, left for the 3rd book. I'm still interested in finishing the story, but not as excited as I was after the first book. Hopefully, the third will be better. Maybe we get a double POV instead of mentions of the other sister now and then.

The final "plot twist" was not a surprise at all. None of the twists were.
We learn more about the magic in Caraval's world, something the first book missed and did not hint at. We also get the necessary background for the MC's mother's disappearance years ago, but that thread is also left for the final book.
