“You Just Need to Lose Weight”: And 19 Other Myths About Fat People by Aubrey Gordon

5.0

A must-read for everyone. Concise, but packed full of fascinating research.

I’m a devoted listener of Maintenance Phase, and I got this book from the library wanting to support Aubrey, but not sure how much new info I’d get. I was blown away by how informative this book is. It’s short, but each sentence packs a punch. There is no filler, no fluff. And still it’s very readable and accessible.

Throughout Aubrey is determinedly intersectional, never allowing the reader to take anti-fat bias out of the wider social and historical context. This is made very clear in the final chapter which rejects a statement that and anti-fat bias is the last acceptable form of discrimination, instead, insisting that it is yet another form of discrimination, thought, marginalized people, face, and asking readers to keep fighting all these issues.
