Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis
4.0
Excellent book, and easy to see why it's a Brazilian classic.
The author's clever chapter names and transitions made me chuckle. There's also so much cheekiness and humorous irony, it's hard not to love and hate Bentinho at the same time. I love the chapter devoted to his beautiful poem. He assures us it's worth publication even though he has only created the first and last lines so, well, I guess the reader can borrow those lines and fill the middle however suits them best!
The translation I read was awful, though. A 1-star translation. Misspellings, random grammar, and clunky English. I look forward to finding a better translation and giving it another read.
