Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

5.0

Such a powerful book. Speak truly gives meaning to the phrase "small but mighty". Laurie Halse Anderson included all the right details without including the boring ones no one wants to hear about. You will relate to Melinda and her story even if you haven't gone through what she went through. You will relate to her if you were went through any form of trauma, if you were ever bullied, if you were ever silenced, if your parents didn't pay you much attention or even neglected you at times. You will relate to her if you had a terrible teacher, if you were forced to meet with your school's guidance counselor, if you had a high school experience that wasn't magical like everyone convinces you it will be.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has gone through these things, or to anyone who has a friend or loved one who has and wants to know how to support them. Speak should be required reading for anybody who thinks rape survivors speak up about their experiences "for attention" or "to ruin the man's life".
