The best trilogy, skill-wise, that I’ve ever read. Dragons and pirates, romance and politics, philosophy and religion, power dynamics and triumphs. What a conclusion. I don’t want to go back to the world of Fitz, I want to stay here with Althea and Brashen and Paragon. But I really hope we get to learn more about Amber in the upcoming series.

Malta grew on me, thankfully, as did Wintrow. A note that the non-communication/miscommunication trope is becoming a pattern in Hobb’s romantic relationships (Fitz/Molly, and now Brashen and Althea really didn’t talk about their issues, and neither did Reyn and Malta). Somehow, in the three books, this makes the relationships slightly unbelievable to me. I hope we see other patterns in future series.

TW: this book has extreme, violent, detailed rape and SA scenes. Only read if you’re sure you can handle that.
