bloudermilk 's review for:
Normal People
by Sally Rooney
4.5 Stars
Though this book has mixed reviews I actually loved it. I had seen a few clips of the Hulu series and the non verbal cues on the show made me wonder what was going on in their heads for that specific scene.
Normal People follows the direction of Marianne and Connell, two people separated by gender, social class and social norms. Marianne story line follows to her issues stemming from her abusive home, feeling that she is nothing, that she adds nothing to this world. Though her family is wealthy she is not deemed popular or is shown to have any friends throughout her life.
Connell on the other hand his mother works for Marianne's family as a house keeper. Connell is not wealthy, is being raise by a single mother however is in the "popular" crowd at his school. He is silent and seems to follow along the lines of what others think of him on a daily basis. He suffers from anxiety.
These two end up having a physical relationship that is kept in secret or so they think, during their "situationship" it comes to show that Connell has true feelings for Marianne and Marianne is able to feel that she is loved however their communication issues take them through many trials and different stages of their relationship. Their social status change course during the college years and then they find themselves within their adult years.
The time jumps throughout this book I felt picked up and dove into the background of what happened in between the events that take place. Marianne and Connell relationship is extremely complex and there are may layers to their relationship, friendship and sexuality. This relationship is consuming and you can feel it because of the way Sally Rooney has written this story.
I want to know how it ends! I am invested in them and their story and I would have like the end of this book to wrap up their relationship more nicely however that is normal sometimes. There are couples who are interwind within each other and make sense however their timing couldn't be more off. Connell I felt had more of a character growth than Marianne did, I would have like to see her move forward as well but there are some women who come from DV families, relationships and even friendships ( Peggy ) that you can move forward.
Their banter and friendship was so cute and I could feel the tension as I read each chapter to see where these two characters would go. I was so happy when they finally got together and not in a "love story" kind of way but a way where you can see the affection they have for one another but their issues tend to get in the way which is NORMAL.
Connell's tendency to not state what he means and communicate verbally was irritating however he started therapy and honestly I felt at the end of the book he was able to communicate more than before.
Marianne's responses throughout her life is just a massive trigger response when it came to all her relationships. The physical, emotional and verbal abuse she gets from her mother and brother shows up when she thinks she is actually okay. She even states she would rather get physically hurt than hear her bother talk to her. This just proves where her emotional growth stems from and where it will only be able to go.
If you are wanting a happy love story this book is not for you however if you like dry humor, banter and an emotional turmoil this is for you.
TW: abuse | emotional abuse | eating disorders (tracking food intake for a sexual partner in a few chapters) | manipulation | suicidal ideations | racism (called out for the most part) | anxiety | depression | BDSM (mentioning) | sexual consent | bullying | sexual harassment
