Oh, it started so well. I ended up liking the portions of the book which did NOT take place on the Ringworld much more than those that did. The universe outside the ring was casually realistic, which I applaud. Unfortunately, this did not apply to the ring itself; often simultaneously confusing and boring, the titular setting was supremely underwhelming.
Nivan’s aliens are more thought out and unique than most, which I appreciated. However, his character development lacked luster and his overarching theme of genetic luck seemed shoehorned in at the last moment.
Glad I read it, wouldn’t read it again.
