This book was a lot different than I was expecting. At first I was put off by the narration which is very stylized a la the Series of Unfortunate Events. Also how many more stories do we need about bookish orphans finding their way in the world? But the world building is very creative, sort of a Victorian steam punk but with biological innovations instead of mechanical ones, and the story gets pretty interesting in the second half. So, I will give the 2nd book in the series a try.
