This book was pretty dark in exploring mental health, trauma, toxic police culture and also had some seemingly paranormal twists.
This town of East Bernheim is the Canadian equivalent of the town Black Harbor in the series by Hannah Morrissey. It feels like every criminal and every bad thing happens in the town.
Jake Stone is a constable with the RCMP and when he’s involved in a case with a gang, his work starts following him home and putting his wife Bree and his son in danger. They decide to move further away but there’s some stories about the house they rented and weird things start happening. Between work and a small child, both Bree and Jake aren’t getting enough sleep so you keep wondering if it’s all in their heads, if it’s paranormal or if a gang member is trying to break in.
There are a lot of triggers in this book & would urge you to seek them out if needed before reading.
I really enjoyed the audiobook version & the 2 narrators. It kept the change in perspectives really clear.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and Dreamscape media for the ALC.
