Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

I'm a big reader of dystopian novels so the subject matter doesn't usually bother me, but I simply could not finish this book. Upon reflection, I believe it's because the story is told by a 16 year old girl, through entries in her diary. In the beginning, she is very immature, thinking only of herself and her emotional needs, as the book progress she begins some serious grieving for the world she has lost.

In contrast to many of the end of world books I've read, this story focuses less on survival and more on the inner world and grieving of the girl. That coupled with our political and economic climate made it very difficult for me and ultimately I had to stop reading it. Maybe I'll pick it up again at another time.

What troubles me is that this is considered teen fiction, I can certainly see the many lessons contained in the story, but WOW this is some mighty intense reading for young adults (someone mentioned 6th grade).
