I love the idea of stories written as nonfiction, so I found the first half really interesting. The writing mimicked both the style and tone of a historical record extremely well - there are excerpts from diaries, letters, and articles included to help the idea of authenticity. I thought the anatomy section was thought out well, and it’s not something I’ve seen before in any other books.
The main problem I had was a lack of detail; the ‘story’ is less than 70 pages and doesn’t go into as much depth as a real biography would. I would love to see an entire book dedicated to the story of Dr. Black, rather than the novella style seen here.
With that said, the premise of the book is amazing. As the doctor descends into his "research and work" you can sense and "see" him descend into madness. His medical experiments are dark and somewhat startling and some not predictable at all. It's sad, grotesque, and opens a new door into genetic exploration at a fictional level. I would recommend this book if you like the strange, forbidden, and solid short storyline.
