five stars is not enough.
this book is magical and heartbreaking and easily my new favorite of all time.
no one else comes anywhere close to laini taylor with her writing and i will forever be in love with her prose and the complexity and poignancy of so many of these characters.
i got halfway through this book in june of 2021 and was madly and deeply in love with it. at the same time, i felt my mental health struggling (because of other factors in my life and the current state of the world). i decided to put it down until i felt i could come back to it with a clearer mind and a somewhat more healed heart. this second attempt i completed in january of 2022 in two days and i was surprised to find i was just as madly and deeply in love with it as i was the first time.
with this in mind, i highly caution readers who may be sensitive to the following topics:
—sexual assault and r*pe, off the page but mentioned frequently and an integral part of the story
—physical harm and death, on page and off
—trauma and physical harm to infants and children, and their lasting effects
—mentions of self-harm and suicide, including attempted coercion
