Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay

4.0

I was hesitant to read Summer Reading because the reviews didn’t seem good at all but I enjoyed this one despite the multiple issues I had with it.

The characters were likable and I thought Sam was honestly just really fun and cool (except she does need to keep learning how to be a better friend)! My favorite parts of the book were any scene with Sam and her brother Tyler - I loved seeing them reconnect in cute moments like when she taught him how to dance. I wish the whole book had just been about the family. Ben was cute and I loved when he would read to Sam and also help her with her chef job. In exchange she was supposed to help him find his father.

However, I thought the father storyline would’ve been featured heavily from the start but it really wasn’t spoken about a lot until I believe at least 40% in. They actually jumped into their romance first so the synopsis of the book is misleading IMO. Sam also has dyslexia and I don’t think it was portrayed well at all. I can’t really speak on it because I don’t have experience with it or know anyone who is dyslexic but when Sam said that guys ghost her when they find out she’s dyslexic i was like did she really just say that? Is that really a thing because I just don’t believe that happens in the real world at all.

So 4 stars because I had fun reading this book and loved the family but I would probably actually give it 3 stars for everything else.
