When We Believed in Mermaids
by Barbara O'Neal
I was curious to see what kind of story this would be when I first got it on my Kindle. It was pretty high on a lot of charts and I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype.
I had originally rated this book as 3 stars. The writing was not bad although the change in perspective and flashbacks were a bit jarring at times and the plot would shift suddenly. The book shifts perspectives between Katherine aka "Kit" and Josie aka "Mari." The latter was supposedly dead due to a terrorist attack. Their mother sees her face on the news and tells Kit who sets off on an "adventure," if we can even call it that, to find her sister. I changed my rating to 4 stars at the last second because this book resonated with me somehow. I can relate to several of the topics discussed and it did tug at the "heart-strings" a bit.
What ensues is secrets that had been hidden (mainly Josie as you may expect) being unearthed, lies, and brief periods of romance. By romance, I mean pages describing in detail of Kit and Josie's sexual encounters. This book has it all. Drug abuse, physical abuse, rape, abandonment, you name it. The ending seemed rushed to me and seemed like a huge "fairy tale" ending.
If you can pick it up on sale or for free even, I would give it a chance.
