The Forbidden Man by Karina Halle
3.0

3.5 stars ⭐️. I loved the first 80% of this book, but the final stretch was extremely melodramatic and went on way too long.

I don’t usually read age gap romances where the heroine is older, but I had faith in Karina Halle and she did not disappoint in that regard! I loved the way that it was handled, and the chemistry between Thalia and Alejo felt believable.

The main thing that hindered my enjoyment of my this book was the length. I expected this to be a bit of slow burn and it’s definitely not—there’s a good bit of steam early on! But since the romantic elements are presented right at the start, the story started to drag near the end. So much so that I wasn’t sure what kind of HEA we’d get. The characters make decisions that don’t make much sense, and the tone of the book really starts to shift. It starts to feel more romantic drama than sweet, contemporary romance.

Maybe that supposed to be make their “will they, won’t they” dynamic more realistic, but all it did for me was kind of ruin a really good book.

Overall, it was fine. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but I’ll for sure read more by this author.
