I absolutely did not like his book. I read this after I read The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry. So, I thought that the information introduced in this book would fill in my knowledge gaps in the alternate world in this book. It did not. I actually left this book somewhat more confused by the worldbuilding.
I started skipping the Tsira chapters around the time she reached Monsatelle. Not only was this part of the story slightly boring, I felt like it took away from the murder investigation in Onna's part of the story. Also, I found the author's description of Tsira's behavior to be contradictory. In this series, trolls are often described as a society that provided the humans knowledge and helped draw the humans out of the equivalent of the medieval ages. And, initially, Tsira is described as a relatively knowledgeable troll that follows established customs. However, in the later chapters, the author begins to describe Tsira as similar to a monster - the author focuses on Tsira's impatience, as well as her capacity for violence and rage. It just seemed like too sharp a shift from Tsira's initial behavior in the story. So, instead I focused on Onna's portion of the story - which was far more entertaining.
I definitely will not reread this book. And, to be frank, I wish I hadn't bought it.
