The Passage by Justin Cronin

2.0

I love apocalypse fiction, and a vampire apocalypse was right up my ally! Except... yeah.

So here's a drinking game for this book (full disclosure: I had this on unabridged audio, which probably highlighted some of the writing issues for me): Drink every time someone says something in the form "[question], [name]. [Name], TELL ME [question]." "Why did you say that, Amy? Amy, tell me why you said that!" Seriously. All. The. Time.

Leaving aside my quibble with their constant eating of 100 year old canned food (...no), and some other disappointments for readers with survival skills, I also found the book to be slow, the hints about the supernatural mystery to be repetitive and transparent, and Amy to be every cliche of 'magical psychic child' I don't like rolled up into one.

I'm sure this book suffered in part because I had high hopes, but, well, it really fell short. Won't be picking up the sequel(s).
