100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson

3.0

A book - a series starter - that has many good points. The author has a good light touch with humor. In fact, these are the strongest parts. The actions and slightly off center comments from Uncle Frank are the most winning and charming parts of the book. The author should pursue a storyline where this side of his writing gets to shine through.
The Fantasy element does not feel organic and born of the world Wilson builds. It feels "imposed" by the authors imagination. Some - too many - of the action scenes are confusing and tough to follow. The sense of drama, danger, and suspense is lost as you try to envision what is described.
That said, I will give book #2 a shot and at that point might as well commit to book #3.
