The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

5.0

the queen of nothing is also a 4.5 stars, but rounded up to five for funzies.
okay guys, can i just say I UNDERSTAND THE CARDAN HYPE NOW
i started the queen of nothing like "okay, morally gray love interest, tall black hair, ok. whatever, nothing special."
and then i ended the queen of nothing like "OKAY I GET IT NOW CARDAN GREENBRIAR I UNDERSTAND I UNDERSTAND"
like: my sweet nemesis????? by you, i am forever undone???? the LETTERS HE SENT?? (thanks for nothing btw, regular book i didn't get the extra letters D: i had to google for them ;c)
come home and shout at me. come home and fight with me. come home and break my heart, if you must. just come home. it is a shabby, worm-eaten, and scabrous thing. but it is yours.
*AGGRESSIVELY SCREAMS INTO PILLOW*
I GET IT I DON'T EVEN CARE HE HAS A TAIL MHMMMM CARDAN

with all that being said, yes. this is the first book where i think the characters were stronger than the plot. the last two books the plot has just completely shone. like completely stole the show. the queen of nothing's plot wasn't bad, but i guess i knew that there were going to be no more plot twists. like, it was going to be a happy ending. and it was a little predictable, which is why it's not a full five stars. sorry guys still not over cardan tbh EIOWJRKSLDJFKLSDFJSKL

all of the characters mentioned in this book really shone with their new character arcs. first and foremost, we have our queen: jude duarte. still in love with her. even more in love, now that she's learned "grace" and "mercy"!!! she's gorgeous i love her
painfully human yet no human can ever touch her
all the supporting characters, madoc, taryn, the ghost, oak, vivi, heather, the bomb, the roach, i loved them. they really add so many layers to the story, and it's what makes the folk of the air so superior.
the quotes in this book are literally so good. i added two which is karazy for me, and i am so tempted to add a third. WHAT IS THE WORLD BECOMING
the queen of nothing has the most amazing characters. so invested. the plot definitely was not as strong as the previous two, but i still enjoyed it immensely. it's also shorter than the other books as well, a super quick and easy read.
i definitely am going to read how the king of elfhame learned to hate stories. yes.
