simonalvey 's review for:
Queenie
by Candice Carty-Williams
This is a brilliant book, that does what books should do, take you completely into someone else's life. It wove the politics of the moment (particularly their Black Lives Matter movement) skillfully through a narrative that also revealed the pervasive everyday racism and sexism of our society. It is also a loving and evocative portrait of Jamaican family living in the UK. All in all I found it illuminating and powerful, a vital read particularly for those of us who are white men.
