If I Stay by Gayle Forman

4.0

It only took me a week, plus staying up until two in the morning last night, but I finally finished If I Stay. With the movie coming out, I thought I should read the book, and I'll admit, I originally thought this was a ghost story (which I don't like), but I was wrong.

I think the story wasn't too bad, but all of the flashbacks to her I before-the-crash life are a little hard to follow, and they don't go in order. That made it kind of confusing for me to read, because between a comatose state in the hospital and flashbacks to her previous life, I'd rather hear what's going on in the hospital. Plus, reading about her parents in the flashbacks, when the readers KNOW they are dead, kind of feels like I'm reading about ghosts.

But that's not the only reason I didn't give it a higher rating. The second reason is because, around the end of the story, even after the car crash, I kind of felt like I was reading another story that I loved, it's called the Beginning Of After. Just like the way this ends, a girl's family is killed in a car crash, so she's living with her grandparents, and trying to move of from loosing her parents and her brother. It just seemed too similar to me and I thought it would have made for more originality if Mia had chosen to leave.

But that's my opinion, and that is why I gave this story three stars, it was enjoyable. But had the similarities been gone, I might have given it a five stars. But it's a good book, and I like it a lot.
