4.5 shimmering stars.
This is a beautiful story about two men who have the kind of love that lasts forever.
Avery comes home to Minnesota to follow in his great-grandfather's Presidential footsteps, and is preparing to run for Senate.
He meets Kane, the owner of La Bella Luna, on a 'be seen' mission one night, and their lives are forever changed.
I loved that Avery balances out Kane's intensity, bringing the playfulness out of him. Kane grounds Avery in reality, and gives him support in everything he does.
They live a life that fullfills them. Everything they want, they put all their focus on and achieve together.
This novel spans 40 years of their lives together, and the joys and heartaches they survived. There is minimal angst, which kept the story flowing well. No frustration over melodrama. It was truly about two soul mates meeting and building their life together.
I was not prepared for the opening chapter and sat in a public space trying to hold in tears. I will head the warnings in reviews next time, and not start a book like this on my lunch break at work.
I felt Kane's anguish and Avery's rage during some important events during the story. I laughed, I cried, I needed many tissues. Truly a beautiful story.
The reason I gave this 4.5 stars is because the ending wasn't something I connected with. I found it a little too chirpy for the intensity of the final chapter. I would have been ok with the whole afterlife scene in itself, but the dialogue killed it for me. It's hard to describe how I feel about it, so all I can say is it didn't work for me.
