The Once and Future King is one of my all time favorite books, although it is actually composed of four books. The first, the Sword in the Stone, is suitable for children but the remaining three books should be for twelve and up as they involve many mature themes. The themes of the first book are about how society interacts with itself and others as explored by a young King Arthur and Merlin becoming different types of animals. The remaining books explore governance, war, and issues of love, faith, loyalty, fidelity, fallibility, justice, mercy, and revenge and have many graphically violent scenes.
