I liked this one a lot less than the first one. I might be in the minority there but I just couldn't get very attached. I found Chih harder to connect to in this one and found Si-Yu not very developed. None of the characters felt as developed in this one compared to in The Empress of Salt and Fortune. I found the "will they eat the characters" thing tedious, and I hated the scenes where tigers ate people.
The mammoths were cool, and I liked Ho Thai Tho. She was the most interesting character. The three tiger sisters were intriguing, and the idea of seeing the same folk tale from two different perspectives was neat. I missed the structure of the first book where a different catalogued object sparked a different story. Overall I was disappointed and I hope the next one is better.
