An Amish Picnic: Four Stories by Kathleen Fuller, Kelly Irvin, Amy Clipston

3.0

My prejudices against some types of romance writings aside, I found this collection of short stories more enjoyable than previous books I’ve read.

Four capable authors have managed to come together to create stories of gentle love, reliance on God, & self responsibility. I particularly appreciated that what we perceive as flaws or disabilities are our given design by God, who does not create mistakes. Sometimes we are given thorns so that in our weakness, we can be made strong in Christ. I needed that reminder.

Perhaps for me the real romanticism is found not in the seemingly mismatched couples and heart warming confessions of love, but in the simple yet complex lifestyle of the Amish & Mennonite. Living among the Plain has washed away the delusions of a perfect set apart people, and though I have yet to fully appreciate this genre of books, I can admit to the draw they can hold.

Overall, I would give the book 3 stars, based solely on my personal preferences and the fact that I read this ahead of my daughter before approving it. I have no doubt that she, with a heart much less jagged than my own, would give the book a higher rating.
