Moderate: Racism
Racism details: There is an isolated moment (it exists on one page alone, but is so out of nowhere+does not bring anything to the text/never is mentioned or referenced again??? It’s just what was “okay” to say at the time it was written which is so whack). It’s a very derogatory/nasty description of a woman of color. For this reason I really appreciate Carmen Maria Machado's edition of the book, because she breaks this moment down and provides commentary on it as opposed to it living undeterred in the text.
