Going Bovine
by Libba Bray
Wow. What did I just read? I cannot categorize this book in any way. It's about an adolescent with Mad Cow Disease (dying) who takes his simultaneous existential crisis on a quest to figure it all out. There's a garden gnome, who turned out to be my favorite character, a teenaged dwarf, and this boy who reminds me so much of my son (child of professors who couldn't be any less interested in school or doing much of anything within the parent's expectations).
I can tell that there's a lot of allusion to Don Quixote, which I haven't read (gasp!), and now I want to read it. I don't know to whom I can even recommend this; it's pretty weird and TOTALLy profane to the point where I'm a bit uncomfortable endorsing it at all. I'll put it on display and hope someone nabs it, and when they do, I'll say, "This was great! I'd love to discuss it when you're done, if you want!" but I can't go to one of my students and say, "I think you'll really love this." I mean, the protagonist gets high every day--it seems irresponsible for me to be the reason this book gets read. I don't know if this makes me a terrible librarian, or what.
Anyway, this book was a trip. That's the best summation I can give. I laughed a lot, shook my head more, paused and thought at moments, and shook my head and laughed some more. There was also some eye rolling. I haven't read a book like this before. Bizarre. Really liked it. Still thinking about it....
