A middle grade novel I can't wait to recommend to young readers, though I can't quite figure out what age. Charlie Thorne is a 13-year-old genius and something of an international spy. The adventure elements and the age of the protagonist suggest that this may be appropriate for upper elementary students, but I would hesitate to recommend the series given the references to romance, flirting, and kissing.
I didn't realize that this was a series, and I honestly want to go back to read the earlier books. Charlie has come upon a list prepared by Einstein of undiscovered discoveries throughout history, and it has become her mission to go on adventures and solve the puzzles to understand them. This book was about the hidden treasure of Cleopatra, which sent Charlie from Egypt to Greece to Rome to an island off the grid to the Met, all the while chased by international intelligence agencies. It was so fun to learn about ancient history and surprising facts about popular characters in history, though a few of those passages were quite dull in the audio version. It was clear that Gibbs was interested in educating his audience, but overall, it worked!
