Duplicate Death by Georgette Heyer
3.0

"Never shall I forget the day we discovered that Lily was being sued in the County Court for a bill to a dressmaker! That was too much! As my father said at the time, one can put up with a great deal, but NOT with being Counted-Courted!"

I am a big fan of Georgette Heyer's Regency Romances. I love her best when she is writing wonderful dialogue for her colourful cast of characters -- of which there are many in this novel. I read so many of her regencies that it is sometimes offputting for me when she jumps ahead through the years to more recent times. This story takes place after WWI, so I am thinking late '30s. English high society is consistent in that the class system is still very much in place, people are entertaining in much the same way, and the social rules are still rigidly enforced by the old guard. But, things are definitely changing. I was (naively) surprised by the drug dealing / addiction theme running throughout this story. You just don't see coming those vulgar sorts in Heyer's stories
