This was a unique read to my typical stuff. Glad this was chosen in our book club. I would not have found this on my own. I think most of my issues are with the side characters and their development. I see why they were needed but I think they either needed to be included less or fleshed out more. They didn't feel like they were added in late and I see the need of them for the story but I did not find myself excited about their chapters.
It was nice to read something that was obviously written to be standalone and not a series. The premise could have easily been abused as a fan-fare dystopian series but instead is a slightly overdone commentary on the current prison system in America.
I do think that some of the footnotes were a bit too on the nose and that an afterword by the author explaining the current prison system would have kept me more in the story.
