Circe

Circe by Madeline Miller
We are back with the Greek retellings!! I loved The Song of Achilles so I thought I’d read her next most popular book, Circe.
One thing I felt was lacking in The Song of Achilles was that the female characters didn’t have enough to do and didn’t have much agency. This book is very different. Women get many different representations but they lead this story. Our protagonist, Circe, is a compelling character who has been disregarded all her life. Her growth and character arc very much comes from her own strength as she spends time to develop her powers as a witch. I think that Odysseus is very well written in this book, as he is in Song of Achilles. I have only taken a star off of this rating because I didn’t like the ending. I’m aware that’s how it happened in the original story, but I still dislike it here, despite Miller’s attempts to make it better. Regardless of that, Circe is a wonderful read and fantastic retelling. Miller’s writing is beautiful and concise, layered with rich imagery that is the thing of myth. I’d definitely pick this up.
