For me there was no suspense which made the story slow. I never had any questions that needed to be answered. The protagonist was also uninteresting to me; he didn’t have any flaws or much agency. 
The story itself is written with care and lovely diction. However I think it’s so highly rated because the premise is exciting. 
Not for me but it may be for you. Cheers.
