The Institute
by Stephen King
The story felt a little long to me, but probably because I was interrupted in the middle and had to set it aside for a while. The heroic children really are quite good at strengthening each other. The conspiracy seems unlikely, but let’s set that aside. The waste of talents is so repellent and I think that’s the point of the story. Stealing from the children, their joy, future, and lives to solve dubious and nebulous problems of the moment. It feels like a stab at climate change deniers, Trump and his mob, or even the current public schools. There are a lot of ways I could go if I had to write an essay on this book.
