The Devil's Detective by Simon Kurt Unsworth

We shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but this one got my attention because of it. The title did as well. The description sounded just like something I'd really enjoy. Unfortunately the internal parts underneath the cover didn't deliver for me. I cut myself off just before I hit the 100 page mark, meaning I got through a third of the book. At this point it was a jumble of things happening, which I found confusing, even knowing they can be pulled together at the end of a mystery. However, they seemed ill placed and made no sense, other than to describe the unpleasantness of Hell. The other story line of representatives from Heaven visiting seemed added to fill up pages to me. On top of this was a main character that I knew nothing about, and had no reason to care about. My apologies if this sounds harsh. I enjoy reading stories with a look into what Heaven and Hell could be like. (Like what was done hauntingly and wonderfully in "God's Demon" by Wayne Barlow.) So the draw was there for me going in. It just didn't give me anything that I had hoped it would though.
