One of the main problems I have with classic science fiction is I often find the characters underdeveloped because the author spends so much time focusing on the sci-fi elements and the themes they are trying to explore. The Island of Doctor Moreau definitely falls into that trap. Prendick just wasn’t compelling enough to hold my attention. He was definitely more of a vessel for the reader to immerse themselves in this world rather than a fully fleshed out character in his own right.

I really enjoyed the plot and the themes explored by Wells and would consider this reflective of the fears of the late 1800s. The mystery of the story that was present in the first 50% added to this strange and spooky atmosphere of the island and the descriptions of it were fab.

The sci-fi elements are definitely hindered by the time period this novel was written in. You definitely have to ignore most of what we know about modern science for these elements to even be considered possible to do let alone actually working.

Overall, this was a fun little story but I’m hoping for better from some of Wells other work!
