Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood
4.0
Tropes Featured: Rivals to lovers, slow burn, closed door, millionaire mmc, he falls first, professional chess mc’s
Initial Final Rating: 4/5⭐️
I started this book because I wanted an easy, fun read in between my fantasy reads and hazelwood gave me just that with this one! I liked the exploration of chess and Mallory learning her insecurities/faults throughout the novel. The nuances of her family dynamic were perfectly captured by hazelwood. I do wish we would have seen more of Nolan, but the parts he was involved in were so cute! Overall, super quick light-hearted read perfect for breaking up a fantasy streak when you need a break!
edit: changing my final rating to 3.5/4 after thinking about it more. I think the reason I rated higher in the beginning was because this book was exactly what I was looking for at the time (a quick/light/short read in between long fantasy books) and had I read this at a different time, my rating likely would have been lower.
