How did this book get written? How did the author pull his meandering thoughts and past into a story about grief and friendship?

It feels so familiar, and capturing the jumble of thoughts into this — I keep wondering about the craft.

The time period of when he grew up feels so familiar, though the author is 10 years older than me. The Gen X of it all is so apparent on the page.

Very self-aware — sometimes to the point of being navel-gazing, but still aware about it! —, stark at times, emotional but reserved about it. I don’t know if I’ve read anything like this about the Asian American experience.
