The Subtle Knife
by Philip Pullman
Would recommend: Yes
In this second book of the His Dark Materials trilogy, I think the author does a good job of building up the second character, Will, so that he is as sympathetic as Lyra, the heroine of the first book. This book is considerably less subtle in its anti-church themes, which I don't think was necessary to the plot.
